Core Classes

The core curriculum is a term for the courses which all IELI students take. The core curriculum at IELI is divided into two parts:

• Communication class (reading, listening, speaking, pronunciation and vocabulary) and
• Writing/Grammar class (writing, grammar, and library research).

Computer skills, critical thinking, test taking and study skills are additional skills needed for success. They are also components of the core curriculum.

The class schedule includes 4-5 hours in class each day. Classes are held 5 days a week, Monday through Friday, and each term is eight weeks in length. IELI has courses all year around. There are five terms yearly. The IELI academic calendar is designed to complement the UNT calendar.

In addition to the two core classes, all students take an additional class for approximately hours a week. Students in levels pre-1 to level 3 attend language lab class in the computer lab. Students in levels 4-6 take Academic Skills Class to prepare them for listening and note taking in a U.S. university.

IELI students in level 6 are able to study half-time at the university and half-time in IELI classes.

Each teacher schedules two hours outside of class each week for additional tutoring and help for students.
