Getting a Texas Driver's License
Main Content
Here is what you must do to get a Texas Driver's License and Social Security card:
- Go to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Driver's License Services office (take your passport, I-20 and I-94 with you) first and pass the required tests. NOTE: you will NOT receive your Driver permit or license the same day you pass the tests; you will receive it later (see #4 below).
- AFTER you pass the tests, the Driver's License Services office will give you a letter to take to the Social Security Office so you can then apply for a Social Security card.
- Go to the Social Security Office (take your passport, I-20, I-94, and the letter from the Driver's License Services office) with you to apply for your Social Security card. NOTE: you will NOT get your Social Security card the same day you apply; they will mail it to you 2-3 weeks AFTER you apply.
- AFTER you RECEIVE your Social Security card in the mail, go back to the Driver's License Office. Show them your new Social Security card so they can give you your driver's permit or license.
