Acquiring a Social Security Number

New Procedures for F-1 International Students (Effective October 13, 2004)

Beginning October 13, 2004, any F-1 student will need to show authorization to work if granted Curricular Practical Training, Economic Hardship, or Optional Practical Training work permission. If the student is working on campus, the student will need to show proof of a job offer, or employment. Social Security numbers will not be granted if there is no off campus work permission, or verified job on campus.

The procedure for on campus employment verification is outlined below.

  • Obtain an offer of employment on the UNT campus.
  • The UNT employer must download an Employer's Letter, complete this form letter and print it on the employer's letterhead. The employer must sign the letter. Signature stamps cannot be accepted.
  • The student must take this Employer's Letter to International Advising in 171 Kendall Hall to apply for a letter from the Designated School Official (International Advisor) to verify the employer's letter and the valid visa status. Please do not bring the letter to International Advising before you have been in the U.S. for at least 10 days. There may be other time restrictions at the beginning of any semester due to large numbers of students and the SEVIS actions we must perform for each student.
  • Take the originals of both letters to the Social Security office, along with your passport, I-94 card, and I-20.
  • F-1's with off-campus work authorization will need a letter from International Advising, plus their work authorization, I-20, I-94, and passport.

J-1 and J-2 Visa Holders

Regulation does not require J-1 and J-2 holders to present an employer's letter.

J-1's will need a letter from International Advising, or their J-1 sponsor, plus their Ds-2019, I-94, and passport.

J-2's will need their EAD card, plus DS-2019, I-94, and passport.
