F-1 On Campus Employment

- A student in F-1 status may work up to 20 hours per week on campus when enrolled in class at any time of year.
- There is no exception to the 20 hour-per-week ceiling, even if the employment is a teaching or research assistantship.
- During the summer, an F-1 student who is continuing in the fall is not required by Immigration to enroll in class.
If the student is not enrolled in summer, and is continuing school in the fall, the student may work up to full-time while not enrolled.
If the student is enrolled in class, at UNT or any other school, the student is allowed up to 20 hours of work during the time classes are in session, even during the summer.
- During winter break, the student may work up to full-time if not enrolled in a class.
- During spring break, the student may work up to full-time.
- During the fall and spring semesters an F-1 student is required to be a full-time student. Full-time enrollment for an F-1 student during the fall or spring semester is defined as 12 credits for undergraduates, 9 credits for graduate students, and perhaps 3 credits for dissertators (check with your department).
- Full-time students do not need permission to work on-campus.
The student needs to show the employer documents which establish identification and employment eligibility, as listed on the I-9 form which all new employees must complete. They must also complete a Foreign National Form and provide copies of their immigration documents.
"On-campus" jobs include work in the UNT student unions, libraries, recreational centers, and in academic and administrative departments.
