English Language Proficiency

All applicants to UNT must show proof of English language proficiency. For International students, this is most commonly demonstrated through TOEFL. However, we accept more methods of English proficiency than most other 4-year universities in the U.S. because of the international experience of our employees and their knowledge of international curriculums. See the list of acceptable measures below.

NOTE: UNT has made changes to its English Language Proficiency requirements, effective August 2007.

  1. English Study at IELI:
    Completion of Level 6 of the IELI at UNT qualifies you to enter:
    1. All undergraduate degree programs
    2. All graduate degree programs except:
      • English Literature requires TOEFL 233 computer (MA) and 267 computer (PhD)
  2. Completion of a program:
    • Completion of Level 6 of the IELI at UNT qualifies you to enter UNT.
    • Official transcript showing graduation from accredited U.S. high school or U.S. Department of Defense school overseas: attended for at least 3 years - Remember! Send your SAT or ACT scores.
    • Official transcript of U.S. Associate's, Bachelor's, Master's or Doctoral degree - Degree must be posted.
    • Graduation with a degree (High School, BA, MA, Doctorate) from an accredited school in other English-speaking countries: Anguilla, Antigua/Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Guyana, Canada (except Quebec), Cayman Islands, Dominica, Falkland Islands, Fiji, Grenada, Guam, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica/other West Indies, Liberia, Montserrat, New Zealand, South Africa, St. Helena, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Trinidad & Tobago, Turks & Caico Isle, United Kingdom, and Virgin Islands.
  3. English Language Proficiency Tests accepted by UNT (Arrange to have test scores sent to UNT):

    SAT (Critical Reading and Writing Sections) 500 or higher on both sections
    MELAB (official version) 80 or higher
    AP English language and Composition Exams

  4. Courses/degrees/diplomas:
